Dirty Harry's Model 29 S&W
In the seventies....everyone was impressed with this .44 magnum caliber handgun, thanks to the movie Dirty Harry.....an alcoholic cop with an attitude and a state-of-the-art weapon.....M29 8-3/8" barreled, blued S&W revolving handgun.
It's basically a rifle cartridge in a handgun. In lore, Harry Callahan used to use the much lighter .44 Special loads with reduced recoil. Not much fun to shoot the Magnum stuff past about 30 rounds, and you can feel the recoil through your bones!
"Are ya feeling lucky, punk?"
Clint Eastwood is an icon.

The gun used in the Dirty Harry movie was a Model 29 S&W with a 6 1/2 inch barrel.
From the author: Actually, they used both a 6 1/2" as well as an 8.375" barrel in the movies and movie posters, according to a good blog I just read.
I agree the character probably did use the 6 1/2" and stand corrected, thanks.
The original revolver, given to the movie director, is now at the NRA Museum in Fairfax, VA. --Steve.
Actually, in most of the first movie, the Model 29 in .44 magnum was not available from S&W. Instead, a S&W Model 57 in .41 magnum was used until the end of the movie when the 29 was obtained. This was because the Model 57 was virtually identical except for bore size.
